Miley Ray Cyrus also known as Destiny Hope Cyrus can be considered an idol and an icon in the eyes of many over the past decade. Cyrus has an enormous fan base including a large amount of SFA students. It is common for people to have either a strong love or hate for the musician and actress due to the controversy over her recent behaviors. When over hearing chatter on the SFA campus it has became apparent that her current decisions landed Cyrus in the middle of many pop culture conversations.
Where it All Began and Claim to Fame:
The 20-year-old superstar spent her younger years being raised on a farm in Nashville, Tenn. before moving to Hollywood in 2005. Cyrus was given the nickname Smiley, later shortened to Miley, because from a very young age she always got caught with a big smile on her face. People who work in the entertainment business surrounded Cyrus all of her life because of her father, Bill Ray Cyrus, who is a musician as well.
Cyrus, like many other artists, transitioned into many different stages in her career. Her breaking moment as an actress is when she got casted as the star character of Disney series Hannah Montana in 2006. Cyrus quickly became a teen celebrity and is still well known for playing the role of Hannah Montana. Her fame skyrocketed when the series ranked as one of the highest-rated shows on basic cable due to its massive audience.
During this prime time in her acting career, Cyrus came out with several soundtrack albums, which led to her focus on music. The first Hannah Montana soundtrack sold over three million copies in the United States and made it on the top-ten single list.
Cyrus got a major jump-start in her music career in 2008 after she came out with her Breakout album that was certified platinum by the RIAA also known as Recording Industry Association of America. In that same year, Cyrus provided the voice for the character Penny in the computer-animated film Bolt. Cyrus also co-wrote a duet with John Travolta for the film and received a Golden Globe nomination.
In 2009, Cyrus starred in Hannah Montana: The Movie and launched her own clothing line. This is also when Cyrus started appealing to older audiences and transitioned into her more adult image by playing a serious role in the film The Last Song and coming out with the album Can’t Be Tamed. These two projects supported her decision to branch away from Disney and redefine herself.
The New Image and Bangerz:
Cyrus recently made extreme changes to her lifestyle, from chopping all of her hair off into a bold new hairstyle, to wearing outrageous outfits and “twerking” in all of her recent performances. This year Cyrus hired a new manager named Larry Rudolph who previously worked with Britney Spears. It can be said that lately Cyrus is portraying herself in a provocative manner attracting more media attention and speculation.
Bangerz, released in October, could be considered the most expressive album for Cyrus. Cyrus got support and collaborated with a lot of famous artists from various genres on this album. These artists include Britney Spears, Big Sean, Ludacris, Future, Nelly, and Pharrell Williams. Big time producers at the moment also worked on this album. These producers include Mike Will Made It, Pharrell, and Dr. Luke.
The music video for the lead single “We Can’t Stop” on the Bangerz album set a record on the Vevo website for having over ten million views within the first twenty-four hours of its release and became the fastest video to reach 100 million views. People responded with all different kinds of attitudes towards her new look and persona in the video.
The second single “Wrecking Ball” also had a provocative themed music video and became Cyrus’ first single to ever reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. This video broke more Vevo records and quickly became viral on the Internet. The video is so popular that this past month on Halloween people were wearing costumes replicating her outfit in the video.
Not only does Cyrus get crazy attention from media and fans due to her latest album and music videos, but her appearances on other artist’s songs and videos are getting attention as well. For example, Cyrus appears in the entire video “23” by Mike Will Made It wearing what some would consider risqué outfits and singing lyrics that reference drug use.
To show her side of this journey and transition, Cyrus allowed a documentary to be filmed that was aired on MTV called Miley: The Movement. The documentary showed behind the scene footage from her music videos, interviews, and real life interaction with some of her fans.
In most recent news, Cyrus received the Best Video award during the MTV Europe Music Awards for her “Wrecking Ball” music video on Sunday, Nov. 10. An accusation of Cyrus smoking a joint on stage at the EMAs is also circulating in the news. After winning her award, it can be assumed that lighting a joint on stage in plain sight served as Cyrus’s way of celebrating. Marijuana is not legal in the country that hosted the award ceremony, but people who have a small amount such as a joint cannot be prosecuted.
Ultimately, Cyrus went from an innocent and wholesome demeanor to living a more wild or “free” life. People, including SFA students, are expressing their views and opinions all over social media and the Internet. Public figures are scrutinized more so than others because of the amount of followers they have and their influence on the public. A lot of celebrities branch out of their usual routine and take risks, but its up to the fans to decide whether or not they are still interested in admiring them.
