Ladyjacks’ Volleyball Victory

Ladyjacks volleyball team beat North Western State Friday Night, at Shelton Gym in Chilly Fillmore’s Invitational.

The first game of the invitational was held this past Friday, at 1p.m. between Souther Mississippi and Robert Morris. Following with the Ladyjacks vs. North Western State at 6:30p.m. The Ladyjacks ended the periods; 15-25, North Western; 25-17, SFA; 25-19, SFA and 25-20 SFA.

The Ladyjacks ended their first game with a 3-1 victory. SFA gets off to a great start in their Invitational opener. Sabrina Burns, number 8, middle blocker, of SFA did a great job, not only getting high in the air but scoring a few points on her end and, a few spikes as well. She ended the game with 16 kills and 5 blocks. Paige Holland, number 1, setter, ended her night with 39 assist of SFA’s 49 of the night. Madison Hanlan, number 7, defensive specialist, went for 27 of SFA’s 65 digs.

The Demons came out of the locker room determined to win, while the Jacks seemed sluggish in the first period. But after that first period the Jacks dominated the court.  Players and coaches alike had their game faces on. They pumped each other up after every point. The intensity in the game was visible and felt.

Coach Humphreys, did a greta job pumping her ladies up. After every huddle and time out SFA would come out with great combinations and spiking the ball back in the Demons faces. They came out pumped and cheering not only each other on but the crowed as well.

It seemed that after winning the first period, the Demons could never regain the lead. Each period the Demons trailed the Ladyjacks by a  few points or simply tied the game but never gained the lead. They just could not overcome the Jacks.

The last two periods were exciting, nail biting and a match not to be missed. The 3rd period was a close one the whole time. The Demons and the Jacks really did some work. A couple of defensive stops were made by both sides, which got hearts pumping and blood flowing, bringing the crowd to it’s feet, and cheering.

Jill Ivy, number 10, outside hitter for SFA held her defensive ground, jumping up at the chance to reject anything North Western had to throw at her. In the 4th she seemed to be a brick wall, which the Demons could not break down. Anything that went her way she spiked back.

The real game was in the 4th period. The Demons came out spitting fire again, as they did in the 1st. The Demons started with a 3-0 run over the Ladyjacks. SFA then managed to tie the Demons at 10-10 toward the end. Finally when the Ladyjacks hit 20, the Demons could not come back, sending them back to the locker room with their first loss of the Invitational.

The Ladyjacks gave their crowd an exciting opening game. A game that kept the crowd wanting more. Cheering, and hollering; the Ladyjacks are a team who are fun to watch. They are the kind of team that gets the crowd going and involved. The spectators did their part as well; by getting themselves to the game and supporting their Ladyjacks. It was a moderate crowd at Shelton Gym that night, moderate but loud.

“ It was an intense 4th period, with Northwestern taking the lead at he beginning, but SFA came clutch at the end, and bombarded the Demons with spikes in the end. Go Jacks!” First time volleyball spectator, Jorge Martinez, sophomore, criminal justice major, LSU member said.

The invitational ended this past Saturday Sept 15. The Jacks won their last two games, remaining undefeated in their Invitational. Beating Robert Morris 3-0 and Souther Mississippi 3-1.

The Ladyjacks regular season will continue, Sep 18, vs. Sam Houston, Nacogdoches, Tx, Shelton Gym, at 6:30p.m. Your Ladyjacks are having a great year with a 8:3 record so far. There are 11 home games left, games are free. No excuse not to come support your Ladyjacks. Plus it’s fun.

SFA Loses to Louisiana-Monroe

Ladyjacks Sweep McNeese St. Amidst Disappointing Season

This season is not what SFA Ladyjack softball fans had in mind. After finishing 2011 with 14-36 overall record, 2012 seemed to be the year that the Ladyjacks would put it all together. But with the season coming to a close, the Lady jacks stand at a record of 13-19 with 4-12 record in Southland Conference play.

Although a young team, fielding five upperclassmen and only two seniors, the Ladyjacks were expected to rebound in the 2012 campaign with many of the players with a year of experience under their belt. Ladyjacks fan Heather Ivins said that she had envisioned this team capable of competing with the heavy hitters of the conference.

“It’s been a long season to say the least,” Ivins said. “We started the season against SEC powers Ole Miss and Florida State and we just haven’t seemed to rebound from those early setbacks.”

The Ladyjacks attempted to salvage the season on Monday, after a rainout on Sunday forced a doubleheader against McNeese St., one of the top teams in the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks showed the potential in the program with a sweep of the twin bill against the Cowgirls with a score of 9-8 in the opener and 4-1 in the second game.

In the first game the Ladyjacks’ offense, which has been in a season-long funk, came to life to the tune of nine runs on 14 hits with a Amber Price walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to take home the victory. SFA scored early and often, leading comfortably after three innings of play. The Cowgirls began to chip away at the Ladyjacks lead, eventually tying the game in the top of the sixth inning.

The Ladyjacks showed grit as the team shook off the comeback effort and put the game away in the final inning. Ivins said it’s a result she has been waiting on all year.

“This is the first time I’ve seen this from this team,” Ivins said. “They could have got down on themselves after they let McNeese back into the game. But they didn’t. They persevered and brought home the win.”

In the second game, pitcher Carlie Thomas, who recorded the win in game one in relief,  pitched seven strong innings allowing only one run on 11 hits while recording four strikeouts leading the ‘Jacks to the 4-1 win. Price provided the offense for the ‘Jacks with a two-run single in the second inning to give the ‘Jacks an early lead that they would not surrender. Ivins said the team showed what she expects it to do in the following season.

“I fully believe we will compete for the conference title,” she said. “There is so much potential and once all of the players put everything together and start to get some confidence, there is no telling how far they could go. Maybe even the Women’s College World Series, who knows?”

Fresh off their impressive doubleheader sweep, SFA fell to the University of Louisiana Monroe Warhawks in Nacogdoches before dropping both games of a doubleheader to  the Bears of University of Central Arkansas. Though the season has been difficult for diehards like Ivins, she said that passion is what makes the game so special.

“I grew up around softball and would spend hours out in the yard with Dad hitting the ball,” Ivins said. “It can be frustrating at times but I always try to remember why I love it so much and I know that it is because of my father and the memories we created when I was a little girl in pigtails. I can’t wait to come out here for the next game because I feel connected to him even though he is gone.”

The Ladyjacks will travel to Ruston, Louis. to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech on Wednesday.
