After a student graduates from their last form of higher education, there is a period of time in between graduation and starting a career that can be a stressful yet exciting. This chapter in life consists of making resumes, applying for jobs, and going on interviews with potential employers.
There are many ways students can prepare for life after college. It is considered a good idea to network and meet new people in order to develop connections with organizations or companies. For example, being involved in different organizations while attending a university can be a good way to meet alumni that are well established and could help facilitate job opportunities.
Students may network through doing an internship, contacting alumni, and working for establishments in Nacogdoches that will provide experience in the field that the student is planning to start a career in. Setting goals and having a plan to achieve those goals are two key components in being successful after college.
McCall Springer is a prime example of a student who utilized these techniques in order to land the internship of her dreams. Springer, SFA senior, majoring in fashion merchandising has gotten the opportunity that many college women dream. She got this opportunity by meeting new people in the industry she wants to work in. Springer is 21-years-old and she is from Longview, Texas. She is also a member of Delta Delta Delta social sorority and the Fashion Merchandising Club at SFA.
At a young age Springer knew that she had a passion for fashion. When she came to college she knew exactly what she wanted to study and throughout her college experience she loved all of her fashion merchandising classes.
Springer worked as a sales woman and model for Sparrow Boutique in Nacogdoches, Texas. While working for Sparrow, Springer got the opportunity to gain experience by going to Dallas World Market with her manager to help pick out clothing for the boutique. The incredible feeling that Springer felt at Dallas World Market reassured her that being in the fashion industry was meant to be in her future.
On the trip to market, Springer and her mother decided to make a spur of the moment trip to a Tory Burch outlet, where they coincidentally found a front row parking spot. Earlier that day Springer and her mother had a conversation about Springer’s plans after graduation and that she needed to find an internship, this is when they had a brief prayer that everything will fall into place for Springer. Then, during their visit to Tory Burch, Springer got the idea to ask one of the employees how they got their sales position.
After introducing herself to the sales representative, not knowing where she was going to intern for her senior year at the time, Springer gave her contact information to the salesman and got the opportunity to meet the Tory Burch manager. As they had a casual conversation Springer and the Tory Burch manager ended up having mutual acquaintances and being sisters in the same social sorority.
In less than a month McCall will be moving to Highland Park in Dallas, Texas, where she will be interning at Tory Burch. Tory Burch is a very prestigious American fashion designer, businesswoman, and philanthropist who started her own clothing line named after herself. Her line is sold in certain department stores, online, and in Tory Burch outlets.
