Joey Greer was born in a small town called Orange, Texas on November 29th, 1995. Joey started playing guitar and singing at the age of 7 and has grown musically every day since. Joey is a junior at Stephen F. Austin State University studying pre-dentistry and will be starting his senior year this coming fall. Aside from being a student, Joey is also an aspiring country musician.

From an early age, Joey has been surrounded by music. Both of his parents were worship leaders until he was around 13 years old. He has always been performing and leading worship in non-denominational and Baptist churches his entire life. Joey stated, “from my earliest memories my mom and dad were leading worship from church to church.” He has even performed at several church camps for children throughout his life. Joey just recently started writing country music about three years ago, but said he has always been a fan of country music. He went on to say that he has been surrounded by the country music genre for about as long as he has been influenced by Christian music. Joey was originally studying at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, but figured SFA was the better opportunity for his desires in pre-dental studies. He stated, “there is something about going to a bigger school to see if your academics hold up, and they did. So it was very rewarding.” Joey has performed as the opening-act for many big country artists at Banita Creek Hall exactly a dozen times. He said the most rewarding part is receiving a “good job” from a famous artist. Joey plans to apply for dental school this June. Joey said that it is extremely difficult balancing his curriculum with his music. and that he has to find strategic ways to balance the two. He said you have to give a lot of things up and pick and choose your time wisely like studies, social life, and being a fulltime student and musician. He said he loves everything about music and the rush of a stage.

Writing music, on the other hand, is Joey’s way of escaping from school work. Joey went on to say, “writing lyrics shows the purest form of me, it allows me to escape from the rushing world around me.” Joey is currently working on an EP, which he has been working on for months in a studio. Joey’s EP should be available on iTunes and Spotify by mid-June, this summer. Above all else, Joey Greer is inspiring because he took a giant leap of faith transferring universities, and for continuing to follow his dreams despite the struggle of school. Joey plans on graduating from SFA in the fall of 2019, with a Bachelors Degree in dentistry. Joey said he will still finish his degree, even if his music career takes off. He ended with a laugh, saying his degree is a “back-up plan” if his music career fails.
